My friend Juan rated this with 4 stars so I was compelled to do the same. Juan is one of my GR friends who read my reviews. I am always excited to have new friends who actually try to know me more by reading what I write. There is some kind of hope that true friendship is somewhere in the offing. Shiela is correct; those who claim to be your friends but do not read your reviews or even your profile may not really be true as they are not interested to know more about you.
After all, even your taste on books speak a lot about you, am I not right? We still read foreign books but we make it sure that we read at least one local book together very two months. Kangkong is a passage-to-manhood story of a young man, Plorante Acabo amidst the backdrop of the famous battle, The Cry of Balintawak or the early uprisings of the Filipino rebels called katipuneros against the Spanish government.
Others in cameo roles are Macario Sacay, Emilio Jacinto and all the lesser-known participants in the revolution. There are parts where Alabado spends a lot of time giving the details of the scenery, that I like, but I would presume to be boring to most readers.
If you try to imagine the places mentioned in the book compared to what they are now, I am sure this book would be interesting to you too. I really liked this book.
