Abundant to all the needs of man, how poor the world would be without wood. Wood is a complex and wonderful medium. In order to take advantage of some of the many amazing things wood has to offer we first have to understand trees and learn the vocabulary.

Trees like people are shaped not only by genetics but by where they live and who they live with. Even though there are many similarities within species, individuals vary wildly. In this class we will take a few trees apart and begin to see how tree growth and function effect the visual, textural and structural nature of wood. We will then see how all this relates to aesthetics, design, strength, structure and stability in our projects. We will do an overview of wood use through time and see how we continue to stretch that use today.

This class is recommended for anyone interested in taking part in our ongoing program Principles of Woodworking. A fundamental understanding of wood and a few of its many personalities is invaluable in the craft of woodworking. If you are currently enrolled in Principles of Woodworking you can take this class at half price. Note: Please bring a lunch.

Drinks will be provided.
